The car will pick you up at your hotel, and transfer you to Ostia
Antica, about 40 minutes from Rome.
This is a 6-hour private car and walking tour through the archeological
site of the Roman harbor city developed during the Imperial Age. The
Latin name Ostium means 'mouth of the river', and therefore indicates
its position along the Tiber River. It was founded as a military colony
to guard the Tiber's mouth against seaborne invasions.
Ostia was officially founded during the Monarchy, and later became
the official harbor of the city of Rome. It evolved into a flourishing
trade and business center that further developed throughout the following
centuries. Since virtually all imports reached the capital via the
Tiber River, Ostia gained prominence as the domestic landing for cargo
boats. Ostia now covers more than 10,000 square acres, surrounding
a main street that runs for more than one mile. It is still easy to
imagine the local shepherds who for centuries sheltered their animals
among the ruins. You will see ancient apartment buildings, taverns,
baths, temples, laundry shops, grocery shops, an amphitheater and
stunning mosaics, many that are still intact.
The remains that have been discovered are exhibited in the nearby
Ostiense Museum. On display are some of the ancient sculptures, mosaics
and objects belonging to the pagan cult of Mithra. It was very popular
in Imperial Rome and its members worshiped Mithras, the Invincible
Sun God.
On your return to Rome, we'll drive to the district of E.U.R., the
Esposizione Universale di Roma, for a guided visit of the buildings
and urban spaces. This was the area that Mussolini began building
before World War II to exemplify how architecture could transmit the
ideology of Fascism. Although it was not completed, there are many
impressive buildings and interesting museums at this site.
