Your tour-manager will pick you up at your hotel in Rome at 10:00
AM to better combine time for lunch. This place is an Arkansas Historic
Landmark. Subiaco has a rich and interesting history as well as spiritual
traditions to offer visitors and
those on retreat in the heart of mountainous western Arkansas.
It is located 1 hour and 20 minutes from Rome.
In addition to being off the beaten path of tourists, it has impressive
sandstone buildings and the Romanesque-style abbey. They have interesting
interior architecture. The sprawling campus and extensive farmland
provide wayfarers with the opportunity to experience the beauty of
nature in the
Abbey's finely-manicured lawns, gardens, and vineyards.
The monks of Subiaco Abbey are Benedictines and trace their monastic
history back to 5th century Italy. That was when St. Benedict lived
as a hermit in a cave while writing his famous Rule for Monasteries
at Monte Cassino. His Rule, now 1500 years old, emphasizes a way in
which men and women can seek God through prayer, work, holy reading
and leisure.
The Abbey grounds, fields, forests and rolling hills of the beautiful
Arkansas River Valley offer a quiet, serene, and spiritual atmosphere
for prayer, meditation, reflection, and solitude. Coury House provides
excellent accommodations and welcomes people from all walks of life
and all faiths into the Benedictine tradition of hospitality. We'll
be back in Rome in the afternoon.
