You will be picked up and taken to the dock in Civitavecchia, about
an hour driving time. We'll start our tour from Piazza Venezia,
the central spot of the city. It is dominated by the gigantic monument
to Vittorio Emanuele II, and has been sarcastically nicknamed 'the
wedding cake'. Capitol Hill and the Roman Forum are a mere ten minute
car ride away. Your view of the glorious Forum Romanum is breathtaking.
This was the site of the political and religious center of Ancient
Rome.
After a short walk from here, you will feel fully immersed in the
spectacular Piazza del Campidoglio. This piazza was commissioned
by Pope Paul III, and designed by Michelangelo Buonarroti. It was
a tribute to Emperor Charles V's visit to Rome. The Jewish Ghetto
is close by, and so we'll take the opportunity to explore the absorbing
history of the Jewish community in Rome. At one time, Pope Paul
IV enacted a law which restricted Jewish citizens to reside only
within the high walled area. After many improvised stops, you'll
arrive at the Piazza Navona to view the stunning fountains created
by Bernini. There, you will also see the Church of Santa Agnese,
which was commissioned to be built by Borromini, the artistic rival
of Bernini. Due to the fact that many of
these attractions are in close proximity to one another, you will
have the opportunity to see many sites in a relatively short period
of time. Your lecturer-guide-driver will enable you to use your
time most efficiently, getting to and through these sites.
When this tour is completed, you will have a comprehensive understanding
of The Eternal City.
Perhaps you will also have a list of sites that you will want to
explore further, upon your inevitable return. If you wish, and upon
your request, lunch will be served in an authentic Italian
restaurant on the route of the Appian Way. We'll have you back to
your ship according to your needs.
A 3-hour Vatican Museum walking tour is available upon request.
