Car pick-up will be at the hotel in Rome, followed by a transfer to
Assisi, a well preserved Medieval town in Umbria.
It is home to Italy's patron saint, St. Francis. The town maintains
remarkable frescoes created by Giotto and Cimabue. Assisi is beautifully
situated on a fertile hill, and brightened up by olive groves and
cypress trees. It stretches out along the slopes of Mount Subasio
in a lovely spot along the Valle Umbra.
You'll walk through the old fashioned St. Francis Basilica with its
quaint chapels. Then, there are the narrow streets filled with artisan
shops and fine art galleries, all worth a visit.
Upon entering the town, one inevitably experiences a Franciscan atmosphere.
It has been documented and illustrated to a degree in famous literature.
Its breathtaking panoramic views of wild poppies dotted by fields
of sunflowers are marvelous.
After enjoying lunch in an authentic Umbrian restaurant, we will drive
to Orvieto. Many visitors have appreciated this town for the greatness
of its cultural, artistic and monumental heritage. All of this is
complemented by the delicious specialties of the local cuisine. Don't
miss tasting the Orvieto Bianco and Orvieto Classico. They are both
some of the finest of the Umbrian wines.
