Your tour manager will pick you up on Sunday at your hotel at 9:30
AM. This memorable and amazing tour includes a visit to the main cathedrals
of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, Santa Maria Maggiore, the Holy Staircase
and San Giovanni in Laterano. In each area, your guide will discuss
its importance, thus saving time and energy for you, all from the
comfort of
your private car. Our next stop will be the site of the Catacombs
on the Appian Way. You will explore these underground tunnels that
form a complex labyrinth. This was where early Christians created
cemeteries that included tombs, galleries, family crypts and niches.
You will learn how these communities grew into the powerful Roman
Catholic Church and its devout followers. This is more than a tourist
site or an archeological trip, but a pilgrimage of faith to witness
the strength of the convictions of the newly converted Christians.
Another stop will be at Aventine Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome.
Here, you will learn about
the tradition of the 'Key Hole'. Your tour will continue on the other
site of Tiber River, driving towards world renown St. Peter's Square.
This is considered to be the cradle of Christendom. Your turn will
come for your Papal Blessing, a once in a lifetime experience! Your
tour guide will show you how to take your place under on the balcony
of the Apostolic Palace.
At 12:00 PM, Pope Benedictus XVI will appear at the window of his
private apartment, and after a brief speech, he will bless the audience.
Your knowledgeable escort will then lead you into St. Peter's Basilica
to admire the countless treasures and vibrant masterpiece. They will
come to life as they are explained and described in one of the most
spectacular settings. Michelangelo's Pietà, Gian Lorenzo Bernini's
Canopy and the
Tombs of the Popes are just a few creations that will take your breath
away. This itinerary provides you the opportunity to learn from an
insider's perspective. We'd like to
inform our guests that in the summer, from July to September, the
Pope resides in Castel Gandolfo. Therefore, the ceremony takes place
in the square in front of his residence.
